Scenic Cruise and Dolphins – Hilton Head
This past summer at Hilton Head, we always stay in the Shelter Cove area and decided to take a boat tour out to see if we could find some dolphins. It was a very warm day, but it was well worth it to be on a boat with the breeze! The company that runs the dolphin charters out of Shelter Cove is Hilton Head Island Adventures. They have been in business for a very long time and are extremely knowledgeable about the area.
The boat, the Holiday, is a larger boat and has plenty of seating areas, including some that are covered. The boat departs several times a day, including a sunset cruise. The cost is reasonable, but they only take cash so be prepared for that. No reservations are necessary for this cruise. They also have a snack bar, so have some additional cash on hand for a quick snack or drink while you are onboard.
We boarded for a mid-afternoon cruise and as soon as we left the harbor, we stopped to look at some dolphins that we had already found. We were able to see many different sets of dolphins during the cruise. The captain provided a lot of great information about the dolphins as well as the areas of Hilton Head that we were cruising by. It was fascinating just looking at the homes and developments along the way!
The cruise takes you almost down to Harbor Town and then turns around to return to Shelter Cove Marina. This was a great activity for an afternoon break from the beach/pool. The amount of dolphins that you will see on this cruise will vary. It will all depend on whether they are in the sound or not at the time that you cruise. Overall though, it is a great experience and we would definitely take their cruise again, perhaps the sunset cruise next time!
